A Young Atheist at Thanksgiving

My family and I were blessed to take part in All-nations Bible Church (ABC) first Thanksgiving fellowship and outreach meal this past Thursday. ABC is a new church plant in the Perrysburg area who has a heart, as its name says, to reach all nations for Christ.

After the meal time, I was able to sit across from a young Vietnamese man (who I will call Steve) who attends a local private high school. His parents sent him here for a better education and further experience, but I believe God sent him here for an even bigger purpose.

During our conversation I asked what religion he was. “I am an atheist and my family is atheist. Even much of our country is atheist,” Steve said.

“Why are you an atheist?” I asked.

Pausing for a second, Steve began to answer, “That’s a hard question…I don’t know why.”

I probed further, “I see. So what do you think about death and what happens after you die?”

“I don’t really think about it.” Steve said and then continued to share how they almost avoid it.

By God’s grace I was then able to share why I am a Christian, how we are sinners and what God did to save the lost. It is amazing how a chocolate candy, Steve’s phone and other common table objects helped illustrate the Good News! Though Steve knew all people are sinners, the concept of God, His Son and the plan of redemption was all new.

Praise the Lord, Steve was interested and would like a Bible. Yet at the same time I know that as he gets back into a school routine, it will be easy to forget this Good News. So please pray for Steve, that God would continue to work God’s word in His heart and save Him. Pray for further doors into this young man’s life and give thanks that God is at work.
